Creating a Website isn’t as simple a process as it was back in the 1990′s. There are more kinds and types of web sites in existence today than ever before. At the end of the day, however, the most important thing is to have a SITE THAT SELLS.
Let’s take a quick look at the different types of web sites that are in use today.
- Business/Commercial Websites: Used to promote a businesses products and services
(Example - Stor-N-More Self Storage - East Tampa, Brandon, FL.) - Organizational Websites: Used to promote an organization or non-profit group.
(Example – The Mark Wandall Foundation) - Personal Websites: Used to promote an individual. Freelancers often use a personal sites to show examples of their work, portfolio, resume, experience, etc.
- News Websites: News sites are used to keep up with news and providing information about current events in either a general sense… or for a particular niche (Politics, Sports, Finance, etc.)
- Blogs: Short for “web logs,” were originally used to create and maintain online journals and diaries. Now, their uses are practically endless. Blogs have become content management systems within themselves and are used to manage a variety of different business and personal type websites.
- Entertainment Sites: Entertainment sites are used to provide products and services which would include but not be limited to items such as – games, music downloads, videos, puzzles, cartoon animations, etc.
If you’re just starting out, it’s important to talk to an experienced designer/marketer who can help you through the planning process all the way to completion. Such questions to ask besides the initial cost would be…
- What are the ongoing monthly costs of the site and do you provide reliable web hosting services?
- How much will it cost to update the pages with new content and/or information?
- Will the site be submitted to the Search Engines. If so, which ones?
- Will data be provided show how many visitors are coming to the site, where their coming from, what pages they’re viewing and how long they’re spending on the site?
There are many, many questions you can ask. These are just a few basic ones. If you don’t feel comfortable with the person you’re talking to and they’re not answering your questions in a way that makes sense to you – it doesn’t matter how popular they are or whose sites they’ve built – get another opinion.
The most important thing is to be certain the individual either has a background in marketing – or works with other individuals that do. Website design and marketing go hand-in-hand these days and having the design without the marketing won’t get you very far in today’s ultra-competitive market place.
